I noticed it today as I was driving home from work. The air had changed. It is something I notice every year around this time, the air gets this crispness to it. You can actually smell fall arriving. Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE summer! The whole season is warm and relaxed. The term “summer state of mind” is very true when you’re sitting outside at night watching the sun slowly set feeling like you have all the time in the world. But there is something about fall. Here are my top ten reasons why I enjoy this season so much:
Nothing screams FALL to me more than pulling up to Dunkin Donuts and seeing that pumpkin coffee is back! If you have never had this glorious creation, I apologize because it is truly amazing. There is also pumpkin picking which is so much fun on a beautiful fall day! The list could go on and on; pumpkin pie, cupcakes, eggnog, whatever! It’s the season of pumpkin!
Toward the end of summer I find myself longing to wear my knee high boots and scarves. While summer makes it easy to get dressed every day (a dress and some sandals, Boom! Done), I do find that I get into a rut after awhile of wearing light, sweat preventing clothing for so many weeks. Sometimes you just want to wrap yourself up in a sweater and take a deep breath of the crisp fall air.
8) Fall Themed Foods
Around mid-August I notice that the food at the grocery store starts to change themes. Instead of advertisements for burgers and BBQ themed food, things start moving in the direction of apples and indoor food perfect for a Sunday watching football. Even your Pinterest page starts to become all autumn. When you see Octoberfest as the beer on tap, you know fall isn’t far behind.
I know many people are not sports fans but my house is not like that. The start of the regular football season is like a holiday around here. The team colors get put on, the pre-game coverage starts playing before breakfast is even done and usually about fifteen minutes into the game the yelling at the TV starts. While some people may find it boring, it’s family bonding time for us. Sundays in the fall are a day where we all spend time together watching the games.
I live in New England which is known for some beautiful sights when it comes to leaves turning. It happens so slowly at first that you just happen to notice a patch of orange leaves on a tree and before you know it you are surrounded by reds, oranges and yellows. When the sun hits a autumn colored tree just right it can really make you stop and take stock at how simply beautiful it really is.
5) Fall TV
Fall always has great shows on. All the network shows start their new seasons and it seems like FX puts all of their greatest stuff out in the fall. Sons of Anarchy, American Horror Story, It’s Always Sunny in Philidelphia, The League; the real title of this one should be –FX Puts Out all of my Favorite Shows in the Fall-but it does seem like my DVR is crammed to the max with television to watch once the summmer is over.
Halloween is one of my favorite days of the year. You get to dress up in fun costumes, eat a ton of candy with no shame and only have to see the family members you really want to celebrate with. Plus, when you have a kid you can go trick or treating and not feel weird about it. Bonus-cheesy horror movies on every channel!
3) Back to School
I know parents enjoy this more than kids but there was always something about going back to school for me that made it exciting. Everything was new; teachers, clothes, kids, notebooks. The feeling didn’t last very long once the real schoolwork got underway but for those first few days, going back to school didn’t seem so bad.
2) Open Windows
We are spoiled with our air conditioner. It gets its fair share of use in the summer to prevent the house from getting muggy. I love when it’s cool enough to shut off the A/C for good and be able to open all the windows and let that crisp, sweet smelling air do it’s magic.
Whether you have a fireplace inside or a firepit outside, fall finally lets you put it to good use. I love the smell of a crackling fire. While you can light a fire in the summer, it’s usually too hot for me to enjoy them for too long. I like feeling the cold air around me with the heat of the fire taking the edge off.
